I am Black and I am proud.
I am proud of the contributions that my ancestors and my people have made.
I remember the first time ancestral heritage came up in a casual conversation amongst my corporate peers. They were discussing their ethnic makeup “oh, I’m 20% Irish, 6% this, 74% that”. And it was a conversation I couldn’t fully contribute to because the privilege to trace my ancestral roots back that far is not something that is available to me. It still hurts me, if I’m being honest, not to have the privilege to piece together my full ancestral history.
Despite many of us being unable to trace our roots past a certain point because of the brutalities that our ancestors faced, I look forward to the history we are making now. I look forward to affording our children, and grand children and great great great grand children, with the ability to trace their lineage back to us and our parents and our grand parents.
